Turtlerock Farms Vineyard lies on the upper side of Naramata Road half way between Penticton and the Village of Naramata. The land is on the upper side of the ancient lakefront from prehistoric times. There are two separate plantings divided by the driveway into two approximately equal pieces. The lower half is the home to Cabernet Franc and the upper side to Merlot. The vineyard has a west facing aspect looking across the lake to Giant’s Head in Summerland. Both plantings are cropped fairly low in order to ensure top quality each year with the given vintage conditions.

The Terroir – The Naramata Bench is quite unique. Lying on the east side of Okanagan Lake and on the downslope of the eastern ridge of mountains the late afternoon is a time of cooling breezes. But lest you think it is too cool for the development of great reds, the region benefits from what we like to call “two suns”. In addition to the normal sun, there is the second sun, which consists of the reflection of the sun off the waters of the lake. This effect is most pronounced between about 3pm and sunset when it is very easy to feel the reflected sunlight off the water. This “two suns” effect allows the plants to continue to carry on photosynthesis at a much higher rate than would otherwise be available only from the incident sun, and offsets the cooling breezes to produce an almost perfect growing condition during the three months of June, July and August. Before and after that time, the sun is too far in the south to have a significant effect.

2016 Tertre Rouge - $28
'Though Alan Dickinson and Synchromesh is legend for riesling, they also produce high quality reds, like this cabernet franc / merlot blend from Naramata's Turtle Rock Farms. The 2016 was packaged under the white label, and is a blend of 66 merlot and 34 cabernet franc, 30 percent of which saw new French barrels for 20 months. The cab franc is entirely whole bunch, giving a whole new fresh and brisk dimension to this wine, one under the previous and sun-bloated 2015 was a bit heavy. In contrast, this is positively smashable, with duskier wild blackberries and blue plums, graphite-lined fine tannins and a sketching of textural spices to a lifted, perfumed, bitter cassis finish. Lovely reflection of vintage variation and direction. 90 points'

2016 'Black Label' Merlot - $50
'From a single vineyard on a granite / gravel base above the Naramata Bench, this merlot is plump and rich with ripe black plum, inky dark cherry, dark chocolate, on a deep, rich palate. Acidity is granite-brightened, and tannins are soft and leathery, leading to a warming, espresso and spiced cake finish. Drink this heavyweight merlot now, ideally with grilled ribs. 89 points'

2016 'Black Label' Cabernet Franc - $50
'From Naramata's Turtle Rock Farms Vineyard and its granitic gravels comes this herbal, fleshy cabernet franc, plumped with savoury red currant, sour cherry, tight raspberry, alluring red florals on a tight granitic base. Tannins are firm and tightly knit, and acidity is running on the early pick side, streaming this medium bodied wine to its spiced finish. Decant this still-youthful wine, or open well in advance; this grows with airtime. 90 points'
